There comes a point every August when I am mentally DONE with summer clothes.
Not summer. I’m not insane. I will happily take the heat, patio dinners and long evenings for as long as they’re willing to stick around. But my wardrobe? I’m ready to move on.
The problem is, the weather has absolutely no interest in cooperating.
So instead of prematurely sweating my way through sweaters and boots, I’ve been looking for pieces that give me that fall feeling without actually requiring fall temperatures. Enter: the transitional wardrobe.
And this outfit is pretty much exactly what I mean.
The capri is officially back — although I’m aware some of us have feelings about this — and this new pair from Zara has quickly become one of those pieces I can wear now and well into fall. For summer, I paired them with another new Zara find: this sleeveless trench. It has all the structure and polish of a classic trench coat without the sleeves, which makes significantly more sense when the temperature outside still starts with a two.
The best part is that neither piece is limited to right now.
Once the weather cools down, I’ll layer a crisp white button-down or fitted knit underneath the trench and swap the slingbacks for loafers or boots. The capris can work with an oversized blazer, a chunky sweater or even a longer coat as we get deeper into the season. They’re pieces that can evolve rather than disappearing into the back of my closet by September.
And then, of course, there are the accessories.
I added my Hermès scarf because nothing says “I am emotionally ready for fall” quite like tying a silk scarf around your neck in August. My Chanel slingbacks, Dean Davidson jewellery and a little Zara raffia bag from last year finished everything off.
I love the mix of high and low here. Zara pieces alongside investment accessories I’ve owned and worn again and again. It makes the whole thing feel a little less precious and a lot more like how I actually get dressed.
That’s really what I’m looking for as we head toward fall: versatility.
I don’t want to buy something now that only works for the next four weeks. I want pieces I can wear while it’s still hot, layer when the temperature drops, and style completely differently by October.
Because apparently I’m ready for fall fashion.
Just not fall weather.
