I’m so happy we can finally share Knox’s entire room with you guys! It has been a long process of finding the right things to put in his room. For one thing, we struggled with finding the right carpet, the right light and what to put on the walls – I didn’t want to rush it, I wanted to find the right pieces that would last him for years to come.
When we first bought this house, the entire upstairs was carpeted, brown walls, yellow-stained doors and just really outdated. As soon as we got possession, we went to work on making sure everything was cleaned out, painted over and completely refreshed. Knox’s room was actually one of the first rooms we completed so we could introduce him to his room before moving in officially. As we worked on other parts of our home, family or myself would play with him in his room for the day just to get him used to his new space.
Now that we’re settled in and finished with the major work, I’m happy that at least one room is officially complete!
The aesthetic we were going for all along was very minimalist for his room. I wanted his main colours to be grey/blue, white and gold. I just love these colours together and it keeps it neutral enough for us introduce new colour choices if we’d like.
The paint for the walls we decided to go with is called ‘Bunny Grey’ from Benjamin Moore. I absolutely love this colour, it’s that perfect blend between light grey and blue – perfect for a little boys room. This colour really keeps the room neutral so pairing furniture and knickknacks make it incredibly effortless.
Since we brought all of his furniture with us from our condo, we didn’t need to invest in too many new items for his room.
One of the biggest challenges we faced was his closet. The original was an old style sliding closet door which needed to be removed immediately because it was completely yellow from all the smoking the previous homeowners did in the house. Instead of replacing it with another one, we decided to keep his closet open for now and build an IKEA shelving unit so all of his speciality items could be hung, it also created additional space for stowing away extra items in his drawer.
Another thing we struggled with in Knox’s room was the light. It was a challenge for us to find a flush mount we liked (we have very low ceilings so it also had to be a certain height from the ceiling). Fortuntely, we had come across Dainolite and absolutely fell in love with their selections of flush mounts. This particular flush mount (we also chose one of their lights for our hallway) just seemed like the perfect fit for his bedroom. The gold detailing matched the rest of his hardware and the gold decal stars perfectly – it was like a match made in heaven! I’d say this was the piece that brought the entire room together. We’re so happy with it and I would definitely take this light with me whenever we decide to move again – that’s how much I love it!
As for the rest of the decor choices in his bedroom, like I said earlier, we wanted to keep it simple, not too cluttered and open for him to play in. We are so happy with how his room turned out and it feels so good to check this one off our list!
