8 Easy (& Fun) Steps For Putting Up Decals

One of the most fun projects so far in this house was putting up these decals in our masterbedroom! From start to finish, I’ve never had so much!

After painting this entire house white (basically a fresh from the smoke-filled walls) we felt our master bedroom was lacking serious colour. White furniture, white bedspread, white pillows and white walls – it was becoming just a bit to…well… white for us and wanted to add some colour or design to the walls to make things interesting.

That’s when I came across Curated Walls. A Canadian-based company that specializes in beautiful decals, murals and wallpaper that adds character to your space.

There were a ton of beautiful options for decals – it was hard to pick just one that we wanted since they were so beautiful! We ended up going with the Paradiso Collection – a beautiful mix of palm trees, orchids, tropical leaves and just the perfect representation of what my ideal vacation would look like! Since I had never worked with decals, I wasn’t sure what to expect – was it hard to put up? Would they stay up? What if I make a mistake? Yet the process from start to finish was incredibly easy, stress-free and very therapeutic I found. In this blog post, I’ll walk you through how to plan out your space for a decal design and helpful tips that I recieved from the kind people of Curated Walls to help along the way!

 1. Decide on the space you want the decals to go.

Before receiving the decals,  there were two spaces in my house that I envisioned they would go on but after evaluating the space and how often we spend time in it – we decided on the bedroom. This helps you envision how the room will look and sets the basis for where you want your decals to go.

2. Make sure you’re working with a clean surface!

This is a no brainer but sometimes, we might be eager to get sticking without realizing our walls need a good cleaning. Dust could hinder the decal from sticking properly so ensure you’re working with a clean, dry surface before beginning.

3. Cut around each decal and begin placing them on the wall

This was one of my favourite parts – and one of the most important ones! We cut around each decal so placing them on the wall temporarily could help us envision how the space would look. To temporarily stick them on the wall, painters tape helped (important to note, if your house is humid, the painters tape might not hold up for very long so you can peel the back off a bit to ensure the decal stays on).

4. Take a step back and make a few adjustments

Sometimes working too closely to something might make you overlook some imperfections. You may realize one side is decal-heavier than the other, if your design needs to come down more, or if one decal just isn’t working in a spot. Take a step back every once in a while to track your progress and to see the direction you’re going in.

5. Take a before photo

Once you’re happy with your placement, take a quick photo in case your decals shift during the sticking process. It creates an easy road map to look back to incase you forget which decal should be placed first (this helps particularly when you’re overlapping a few together).

6. Happy sticking!

Once you’re happy with how your placement looks, the extra fun part begins! Follow the instructions slowly of how to peel and stick each decal. You might need to do a bit of trimming before hand so follow the directions you recieve in order to properly place your decals on the wall.

7. Keep a few decals for backups

Once you’re finished with the decals – I found having a few extras just to fill in any awkward spaces or gaps that may have been overlooked was incredibly helpful! I even gave myself a break for a day so I could come back to see where I could place those extra decals or any areas that may need filling.

8. Don’t rush – have fun!

Not having any experience with putting up decals, I was a bit nervous in the beginning. After sticking the first few on I really enjoyed the process, it was almost therapeutic – fitting pieces together and creating something so beautiful on our walls really made it so enjoyable. My best advice is not to rush and to have fun, take your time and see it all come together!

Hope you guys found these steps helpful! If you’re looking to add something special to a nursery, a statement wall in your home or just wanted to add a bit of colour to small room in the house, check out Curated Walls and their amazing selection of high-quality decals for your next project.
