Fall isn’t over yet and temperatures are going back up – so why not embrace those changing colours by dining al fresco?
Fall is one of those seasons that comes and goes so quickly so we need to soak up as much time as we can during this colourful season! Warm cozy layers, hot cocoa in a beautiful setting is sure to make your fall day a memorable one. If you’re not sure what to pack or what to bring for a fall picnic, I’ve provided a few helpful tips to maximize the most time out of this changing season and a great way for you to get out and enjoy the weather.
Picking your location
If you prefer a more scenic spot with lush trees or in a park setting, map out your closest park that meets all of those needs. If you’re not a fan of what’s near you, this is a great way to pack a picnic for a day and turn your fall picnic into a mini road trip.
Picking the time and date
If you’re a 9-to-5er like me, weekends are the only time you can really plan an event like this. To avoid the crowds, try visiting the park in off-peak times (either before noon or late afternoon). Since fall is over so quickly, planning this afternoon should be done sooner than later. The longer you put it off, the cooler and more uncomfortable it gets to be outside.
What to pack
Depending on how long you plan on spending outside for, it’s best to bring a little more to prepare yourself for whatever you are dealing with when you arrive at your destination.
Recommendations for gear:
- 2 pull out chairs
- 1 – 2 large blankets
- 2 extra warm blankets for chillier weather
- Washable and durable plastic plates, forks, knives, cups etc.
- Napkins
- 2 mugs
- BPA-free bottles filled with water
- Cooler
- Thermos (hot chocolate or coffee)
- Picnic basket or straw bag to hold utensils, mugs, etc.
Recommendations for snacks/beverages to bring:
- Fruit – opt for easy-eating fruit such as grapes, apples, pears etc.
- Pastries or pick some up on the way
- Pre-cut salami and cheeses in a container
- Crackers
- Hot chocolate or coffee in a thermos (if you’re bringing coffee – add in your preferred milk and sugar ahead of time so you don’t have to bring those along with you)
- Wine (very important and why I included the cooler in the previous list – wine does go best with salami and cheeses! Just make sure you bring those plastic cups)
- Water – stay hydrated!
Pack for the weather
If the weather ends up being a little chillier than expected, bring extra layers so you’re still comfortable staying outside. Opt for fleece, wool or other insulating layers that will keep you warm. Of course, bringing extra blankets is always a good idea. If it’s a little damp, bring your windbreaker to lock in moisture.
Pack your entertainment
Some may enjoy the company of others or just prefer to relax but if you prefer a little activity, here are my recommendations for fun activities during your picnic outing:
- Adventure walks
- frisbee
- cards
