8 Tips for Packing Up Your Home With An Infant

A few helpful tips when packing up your home with a baby.

As we approach our moving date, the panic begins to settle in – we really haven’t packed all that much. Part of me dreads the idea of packing up all my things and the other part is moving with an 8-month old. He’s at that stage now where he is curious and gets into a lot of things he shouldn’t. Just the other day, I turned my head for a second and he had shimmied himself across the floor to lick the bottom of my shoes… gross. To get things moving (no pun intended), I put together some helpful tips I’ve tried myself that really helped me get organized and to finish the dreaded task of packing up our condo.

1. Distraction is key

If your baby is like mine, then constant stimulation is something you’re used to giving them. In this case, I try to make a game out of everything I put into the box. If it makes a noise, if it’s shiny, if it moves in any way, I grab Knox’s attention to show him. It gets him excited for the next item which then turns into a game.

2. TV is your friend

I might get a few parents who aren’t with me on this one but I can’t tell you how many times Peppa Pig or the Wiggles bought me some time while I packed. I simply set him in his chair, give him a few snacks and play his favourite show.

3. Bring out all the toys

I find enclosing Knox in a circle of his own toys keeps him occupied in that little spot for a good 30 minutes (you’d be surprised how much you can get done in 30 minutes). Some of the toys I like using make noise, light up or I hand him pop up books that keep his attention.

4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

When people offer to come over and help or take Knox while you pack, take them up on the offer! We’ve had countless family members and friends offer assistance during this time and we plan to use everyone who reaches out! Also, don’t be afraid to be the one reaching out for help. After all, there’s no pushing back this deadline so ask around so you can get the job done.

5. Don’t be like me and procrastinate!

If you really want to avoid throwing every random item in your home into any open box then plan ahead! Pack well in advance so you can take each area of your home day by day. Also by doing this, you give yourself enough time to consider whether or not you want to either donate, sell or keep each item.

6. Sleep is a glorious thing

I don’t have to tell you that when he goes down for a nap or bedtime, maybe now’s the time to get packing!  Since we live in such a small space, I create and tape the boxes ahead of time so I don’t wake Knox. Once he’s down for his nap, I quietly and quickly begin placing things into the boxes.

7. Pack baby’s things last

You never know what you’ll need and when you’ll need it. Toys, clothes, etc. all of those items are now considered essentials and they should be the very last items you pack away. This is also important if you’re moving into your home right away or living with family or a rental for little bit.

8. When to purge

If you’re looking to get rid of a few toys without you know who noticing, the best time to do it is obviously when they’re asleep. The last thing you need is to deal with a meltdown after you’ve just thrown away their favourite chew toy they never really played with.
I hope some of these tips help you with any potential move you might have in your near future. If you’ve moved in the past with a baby, let me know what you found helpful in the process!
