Keep calm and carry-on

With our trip to Florida coming up fast, see what I’m packing in my carry-on for a week’s worth of fun in the sun!

Sometimes packing for warmer weather can be tricky. Remembering to stay in your weight and size limit and knowing what you can and cannot bring onboard the aircraft is just another headache to add to your list too. I must admit, I’m always guilty of packing more than what was needed in the first place. After travelling quite a bit, sometimes only with a carry-on, I’ve learned the tricks of the trade when it comes to packing smart and efficiently.

Necessities for warmer weather vacays:

  1. Sunglasses – sunglasses are those items that you can never have enough. They’re that perfect accessory that can complete an outfit. Bring 3 to 4 pairs, they never take up that much room and it’s nice to have variety.
  2. Downloadable books/magazines – delays happen on airlines, so it’s best to bring a backup of books and mags. Plus, after the third or fourth day at the beach, you need to fill your mind with something.
  3. Stock up on new songs and albums. Listening to new music / old favourites is a great pass time and fun when you’re at the beach.
  4. Lip balms – bring two to three with you! It’s important to keep those lips moisturised.
  5. Ensure all documents are with you – Passport, NEXUS, money, keys, chargers and any medications you’re planning on bringing should be in your personal bag and ready on hand in case. Never pack these in your checked baggage or even in your carry-on.
  6. Always bring a day’s worth of clothes in your carry-on. You never know if you’ll be separated from your checked baggage. It’s best to have your bathing suit, pj’s and a day’s worth of clothing in your carry-on just in case! I also recommend packing your toothbrush and any toiletries that are within the liquid limit so you’re prepared. And, even if your luggage does come in, sometimes what you were wearing on the plane suddenly becomes unbearable to wear, so change into your shorts and sandals upon your arrival so you feel refreshed and comfortable.
  7. Layout all your travel documents and valuables on the bed and double check everything before you throw them back in. I find visually seeing what you have laid out in front of you can prevent forgetting important items and letting go of non-important items too.

Have a look at some helpful tips that have kept me organized when packing for trip.

  1. Make a list – yes we’ve all heard this. But do you actually do it? Making a list and then checking it the next day keeps you organized and also lets you memorize what you need on your trip. You’re less likely to forget anything important. Sometimes making a list and reviewing it twice helps you get rid of anything you’re emotionally attached to in the first place. When in doubt – leave it out!
  2. Leave some of those toiletries at home. Most hotels have everything you need – shampoo, toothpaste, hairdryers, etc. If you’re not sure what they offer, call the resort and ask ahead. This will save you weight and time. For the toiletries you do need, consider purchasing clear plastic bottles from the dollar store and pouring your creams, shampoos and products into these bottles to save you weight and room in your suitcase.
  3. Try on your outfits ahead of time. This will give you an idea of what you will wear but also what you won’t wear. That way, you can leave some clothes behind and make room for some additional shopping when you arrive.
  4. Roll instead of fold – if space is a little tight, consider rolling your clothes. This gives you more room and your clothes don’t wrinkle as much.
  5. Your shoes are great pockets – use your packed shoes as compartments for socks and jewellery, they’ll keep all those items in one place from shifting around and it’s a great way to use space.
  6. Pack versatile pieces – different bathing suit tops with interchangeable bottoms, neutral shorts or shirts can really go a long way so be smart when packing such items.

Of course, these are just suggestions, but I find these help me get started when packing for any vacation. If you have any tips or tricks you like to use when travelling, let me know!
